Why psychological testing?

Sometimes, understanding the root of emotional, behavioral, or cognitive challenges requires a deeper look than conversation alone can provide. As part of my clinical psychology practice, I offer comprehensive psychological testing services designed to provide clarity, insight, and direction for you or your loved one. In-person appointments are available to residents of the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Upland, Claremont, etc.). Some assessments may be conducted online and are available to residents anywhere in California.

What is Psychological Testing?

Psychological testing is a structured process that uses a combination of standardized tests, questionnaires, interviews, and observational techniques to evaluate various aspects of an individual's functioning. These areas can include:

  • Cognitive Abilities: Such as intelligence, memory, attention, problem-solving, and processing speed.

  • Emotional Functioning: Assessing mood, anxiety levels, and emotional regulation.

  • Personality Traits: Understanding enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

  • Academic Skills: Evaluating strengths and weaknesses in areas like reading, writing, and math (often relevant for learning disability assessments).

  • Behavioral Patterns: Observing and assessing specific behaviors of concern.

The goal isn't just to get scores, but to integrate information from various sources to create a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of an individual's unique strengths and challenges.

Why Consider Psychological Testing?

People seek psychological testing for many reasons. It can be helpful when you or a professional (like a doctor, therapist, or school) are looking for answers to questions such as:

  • Diagnostic Clarity: Is there an underlying condition like ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, a specific learning disability, depression, anxiety, or another mental health concern contributing to difficulties?

  • Understanding Persistent Difficulties: Why am I (or my child) struggling with focus, relationships, mood swings, or performance at school despite trying various strategies?

  • Treatment Planning: What specific therapeutic approaches or interventions would be most effective based on my unique cognitive and personality profile?

  • Identifying Strengths: What are my cognitive or emotional strengths that can be leveraged in therapy or daily life?

  • Educational or Occupational Planning: Understanding cognitive abilities to help guide academic pursuits or career choices.

  • Baseline Functioning: Establishing a clear picture of current abilities before starting a specific treatment or intervention.

  • Documentation: Providing necessary documentation for accommodations at school (IEP/504 plans) or work.

Benefits of Psychological Testing

Engaging in psychological testing can provide significant benefits, including:

  • Increased Self-Understanding: Gaining deeper insight into your own (or your child's) patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Leading to more targeted and effective treatment recommendations.

  • Tailored Recommendations: Receiving specific strategies and interventions for home, school, or therapy based on individual needs.

  • Identification of Strengths: Recognizing areas of competence and resilience can be empowering.

  • Improved Communication: Providing clear, objective information that can be shared (with your permission) with doctors, therapists, schools, or other relevant parties.

  • Empowerment: Understanding the nature of the challenges can reduce confusion and provide a clearer path forward.

What to Expect During the Psychological Testing Process

The testing process is collaborative and typically involves several steps:

  1. Initial Consultation/Intake Interview: We'll meet to discuss your concerns, goals for testing, and relevant background history (developmental, medical, educational, social). We will determine if testing is appropriate and discuss the specific questions we aim to answer. We'll also cover the process, estimated time commitment, and fees.

  2. Testing Sessions: These sessions involve completing various tasks. Some might feel like puzzles or games, others involve answering questions about yourself or completing checklists. Testing usually takes place in a quiet, comfortable office setting. The duration varies depending on the questions being addressed, often requiring several hours, which may be spread across multiple appointments. It's important to know there's no "passing" or "failing"; the goal is simply to understand how you approach different tasks.

  3. Scoring and Interpretation: After the testing sessions are complete, I will score the assessments and integrate all the information gathered (test results, interview data, background information, behavioral observations). This requires careful analysis to develop a comprehensive understanding.

  4. Feedback Session: We will schedule a dedicated session to discuss the results in detail. I will explain the findings in clear, understandable language, answer your questions, and provide specific, actionable recommendations based on the assessment.

  5. Written Report: You will receive a comprehensive written report summarizing the reason for referral, background information, assessment procedures, results, diagnostic impressions (if applicable), and detailed recommendations. This report is yours to keep and share as you deem appropriate (e.g., with schools, physicians, other therapists).
